Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the research has been to get to know the opinions of the parents who are raising a child with a mental or intellectual disability on the family model and the division of obligations and powers in the family. Diagnostic surveys and original questionnaires have been used. The research has comprised 222 parents from the Lublin Voivodeship who are raising children with a mental disability, including 111 mothers and 111 fathers. According to the opinions of the parents the dominant model of marriage in their families was mixed: most of the housework was done by wives, yet they sometimes were assisted by their husbands in the housework and in the upbringing of the children. In spite of signifcant transformations in human relations, the changes in the situation of the families raising children with a mental disability are rather slight.
