Summary/Abstract: Political rivalry is a multi-faceted phenomenon, which is why it is often the subject of research by political scientist, who carry out the analysis of its selected areas. The researchers who want to tackle this issue must clearly define which areas of the rivalry they want to explore, and specify whether they are dealing with the individual or collective dimension of the competition. It is only after having determined the basic assumptions that the selection of research tools for individual works may be considered. Individual issues related to political rivalry have been repeatedly explored by various researchers, hence there is no shortage of research tools that make it possible to solve many research problems. The problem arises with regard to performing a comprehensive analysis of the models of political rivalry occurring in individual countries. In order to make a comprehensive analysis of the competitiveness of political parties (in both competitive and non-competitive systems), a more complex research tool, namely the competition model of political parties, should be used. Not only does it allow describing the characteristics of individual elements of the party system, but it also allows specifying the ways political parties compete with each other. By means of competition models, it is possible to analyse crossparty rivalry not only at the electoral, parliamentary and cabinet plane, but also at the communication one.
