Performing an old music — the past and the present

Summary/Abstract: One of the key issues connected with music is its interpretation. The very article is an attempt to answer the question on what role interpretation plays and should play in the case of a modern performance of an old music before 1800. After a short presentation of what an old music is and used to be in modern music culture, the author concentrates on the notion of interpretation as such, and its practical aspects. Quoting old treaties, he shows what the role of a performer interpreting music in the past was, as well as what role the appropriate interpretation in creating modern performances of an old music is.
