SEMERKAND OBSERVATORY IN THE AXIS OF SCIENCE AND THOUGHT

Summary/Abstract: Samarqand Observatory as known the Ulugh Bey Observatory, has an important place in the history of science. The astronomic instruments and article of Zîc-i Ulugh Bey, which was based on the traditional theories and observations in Samarqand Observatory, are very important for understanding of the scientific development in Islamic world. It is clear that astronomic studies in the period of Ulugh Bey are far from the scientific revolution. However, there are very significant scientific contributions in the determination of the stars and calculations of the calendars. In this study, the role of Samarqand Observatory and its importance in Islamic civilization will be discussed.
