Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with some developmental relations of the Czech drama of the end of 19th and the beginning of 20th centuries, when the endeavour of the times to formulate a symbolic construct of the so called sense of the Czech history was, at the same time, analogically reflected in the manner of subject construction of several stage plays. T. G. Masaryk’s articles and studies Czech Question – Endeavours and Ambitions of National Revival, Our Present Crisis and Jan Hus played the cardinal role in the polemic. “The Dispute over the Sense of the Czech History”, as this polemic is called traditionally already, found its shape in several dramas from this period as well. The polemic of the times was also reflected in the theatrical journalism and literary-critical historiography. The paper mentions O. Fischer’s study To Drama from the year 1919 and its critical response (J. Vodák, P. Buzková).
