Summary/Abstract: In the first part of this study I summarized Czech linguists’ opinions on the occurrence of reflexive pronoun se after verbal nouns. The first (the older) line was dubbed “stylistic opinions” because of argumentation style and stress on aesthetics of expression. The second (the more recent) line was called “grammatical opinions.” The second part of this study aims at verifying the following two assumptions on the basis of the SYN corpus (version 6): 1) as it has been expected, a dative noun collocates with the verbal noun {učení} se more frequently than a genitive noun; 2) it is surprising that the reflexive pronoun se is more frequently eliminated when a dative noun follows than when a genitive noun follows. Nevertheless, the collected data have not depicted a significant difference neither by 1), nor by 2). This fact corresponds with the results of a pilot study showing how language users operate when they modify verbs to verbal nouns.
