Summary/Abstract: Two types of valencies of adjectives are considered: the semantic valency (determined by lexical meaning) and the constructive one (determined by construction). There are several groups of Russian adjectives with semantic valencies: (1) verb analogues (готов к чему / инф. ‘ready for sth / to do sth’); (2) symmetric predicates (эквивалентен, параллелен чему ‘equivalent, parallel to sth’); (3) predicates of behavior (Х был вежлив с клиентом ‘X was polite with the client’); (4) conversive and causative predicates (интересный, вредный для кого ‘interesting for sb, harmful (injurious) to / for sth / sb). The following constructions and constructive valencies were also considered: (1) «для Gen. / Dat.»: ‘Y not suitable for sb.’ (The jacket is narrow for me); (2) «в + Prep.»: valency of the sphere or relevant situation (X punctual in carrying out assignments); (3) по + Prep.»: valency of aspect (The film is interesting in the plot; Anagrams are provocative in content); (4) «Instr.»: valency of the cause / motivation (The resort is famous for its springs). It is argued that constructive valencies are often the result of a syntactic transformation, which is analogous to the extraction of the possessor.
