Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we deal with one type of differences between valency frames of Czech and English verbal translation equivalents in the Prague Czech-English Dependency Treebank. The initial assumption is as follows: if the argumenthood of a valency complementation is lost in translation, we deal with some basic semantic difference between the languages. We validate this assumption against two cases of an alignment of a valency complementation with a free modification: first, the alignment of an obligatory and a facultative predicative complement, and second, an alignment of an addressee with a beneficiary. In both cases, the reasons for the functor mismatch lie rather in the vagueness of the argumenthood criteria in the given valency theory or lack of native speaker intuition of the treebank annotators than in the linguistic properties of the languages as such.
