Summary/Abstract: In this paper a complex analysis of motivation of young people to study at university has been carried out. Sociological investigation methods have been applied to survey data obtained by questioning students at Vilnius Pedagogical and Vilnius Gediminas Technical Universities. The following issues have been investigated: motivation of students to study at university, students’ view on their studies, and their expectations after the graduation learning has been analysed as a value. It has been shown that the view on studies depends on personal values and choice of priorities. Objective. To investigate views of university students on their studies and to assess the factors having influence on students’ determination to study. Methods. Analysis of references and documents, questioning of university students and statistical analysis of the data collected. Conclusions. In order to define the cause of person’s needs to seek some value, that value has to be analysed in two aspects: on one side, to consider the value as one’s internal value and on the other, as an external one. 1. Good created by a person has to be recognized and appreciated by the society. This is possible only, if the developed goods is to be useful to other members of the society. 2. The survey has shown that around 80 % of students take the studies as a means necessary to achieve their goals. 3. Around 20 % of students do not know why they study. The problem arrives from the fact that externally shaped values do not agree with the values of an individual.
