They are still present nowaday although Christianity in Japan is no longer branded. The author refers not only to the history of Japanese Christianity, but also issues originated from a culture once strongly concentrated around the sacred sphere. The paper aims to present complicated relations between Shintoist or Buddhist societies and early Japanese Christians, but also is an attempt to answer a few questions: Why the mission initiated by Jesuit Francis Xavier failed its goals? Why, regardless reluctance, Christians have been allowed to build churches and evangelize? How have they managed to survive among numerous attempts of annihilation?
