Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to offer an analytical and symbolic interpretation of the literary representations of the Parisian banlieue in the contemporary French novel, particularly in the “roman de banlieue” Le Cœur en dehors, written by Samuel Benchetrit. Several sociological aspects are analysed in the study from a critical theoretical approach. Among them, the literary discourse on the space representation, the way in which the space representation shapes the urban identities and the specific characteristics of the metropolis periphery. The article focuses as well on how the banlieue becomes a paradigmatic place of marginalization with its own codes and languages. These particular codes and languages outline semiotic landscapes that construct the symbolic, social, geographical and literary senses of banlieue. In order to cover different aspects, the article also analyses how the literary re-creation of those codes and languages are re-defined and re-valuated. With these re-definitions and re-valuations operated in the literary fiction, the author returns to the society a reflection on the society itself and on the social construction of suburban space.
