Summary/Abstract: In this article the author analyses G. Ivănescu’s theory regarding the origin of Romanian dialects, as it is developed in The History of the Romanian Language (Istoria limbii române, Iaşi, Junimea, 1980). Several issues are debated: main aspects regarding the origin of the Romanian language (in terms of territory and historical period), as well as of the Romanian People, the age of dialect splitting of the Romanian language, the problem of Old Romanian and its dialect profile, etc.
