Summary/Abstract: In modern society transvestism is seen as manifestation of gender dysphoria/gender identity disorder (a disorder in which a person does not accept his or her gender status). In the history there were cases of cross-gender disguises that took place with women-saints and that was reflected in the “Lives of saints”. This article is focused on binary oppositions in “The Life of Our Holy Mother Pelagia” and the influence on them of cross-gender disguises. Podjęto próbę opracowania teoretycznych podstaw semiotyki społecznej w koncepcji gender. An attempt was made to develop the theoretical basis of social semiotics in the concept of gender.
