Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the place, which small and medium sized enterprises occupy in the European research and innovation policy and practice. The prerequisites for innovation potential of the Bulgarian enterprises are emphasized, the mechanism of transformation of knowledge into economic result (market value) is analyzed. Conclusions and recommendations for improving the innovation environment and creation of conditions for enterprises for overcoming barriers in realization of innovations are presented.
