Summary/Abstract: Justinian the Great (Flavius Petrus Sabbatius Justinianus) became famous for his enviable ambition and his perseverance in praising himself, as well as for the self-proclaimed title of emperor of the Romans. Upon declaring the autokrator ἰσαπόστολος, meaning “the equal of apostles”, he ranked it above the people, the state and even above the church, also legalizing the inaccessibility of the monarch to worldly judgment, as well as to the holy one. A Christian emperor could not, obviously, have divided himself, which is why isapostolos turned out to be quite an opportunistic category, the highest rank accessible to man.
