Summary/Abstract: In 1993, when Romanians celebrated the 75th anniversary since Transylvania united with Romania, the third painting ensemble for the Union Hall from Alba Iulia, designed and executed by the reputed painter Horea Cucerzan, assisted by his brother of brush Aurel Dumitru. The left archway (Fig. 1) of the Union Hall shows a series of 14 voivodes (from Basarab I to Ferdinand I), while the right one (Fig. 2) presents the suite of 14 scholars (from Gheorghe Lazăr to Nicolae Iorga). The rotund at the left side of the Hall was decorated with a circular portrait of Tudor Vladimirescu. All these paintings reveal an absolute stylistic and chromatic unity, the political and cultural personalities being rendered with diverse expressions and attitudes. In order to give emphasis to their physical and psychological features, the historical personalities are reproduced as busts. These works of art follow the traditions and the cultural-historical canons. One can notice the durable connections with the century-old Romanian art (fresco) and European art (engraving). It has been decided that in the centenary year of the Great Union, the existent pictorial ensemble of an indisputable artistic quality, should be replaced with the pictures painted by Pierre Auguste Bellet, which have already been restored and completed.
