Summary/Abstract: The present article investigates the representation of totalitarianism in Albert Camus’s philosophical essay The Rebel (1951) and the play The State of Siege (1948). A political allegory that denounces the illegitimate and demagogical power of totalitarian regimes, The State of Siege depicts the effects of dictatorship on the community of Cadix. My analysis draws on Camus’s reflections on rebellion and solidarity formulated in The Rebel, in an attempt to provide a privileged access to the situational implications of these theoretical concepts in the play of my choice.
