Summary/Abstract: Two structural-functional types are traditionally mentioned when referring to complex sentences – coordinated and subordinated sentences. However, there are cases when it is not easy to draw a line between these two types because some sentences contain indicators of both coordination and subordination. Such cases include sentences which give rise to conclusion that they are coordinated if we focus on their structural properties. But, if we take into account the semantic criteria, that is, the functional level, then we reach the conclusion that they are in fact subordinated, i.e. that one clause is dependent on the other (e.g. Magla je, pa ništa ne vidim. ‘It is foggy, so I cannot see a thing.’). Similarly, we can find examples of coordinated sentences which express syntactic relations primarily attributed to subordinated syntactic structures – e.g. permissiveness formally expressed by using an independent contrastive clause. In this paper such examples will serve to analyse the limitations of coordination and subordination and to question their traditional dichotomy.
