Summary/Abstract: The novel is a species that has generated various analytical approaches and interpretations given by literary criticism or even by novelists. In the Romanian literature, three stages of manifestation of this species have generally been recognized. The Romanian novel crosses different ages, moving from the exclusive orientation to the outer world of epic realism to the interest in discovering the "infinitely more complex reality of the spirit", specific to the subjective realism. Through an overview presentation of the interwar ethos one can understand in all aspects the complex phenomenon of authenticity, transformed into an experimental ideal of an entire generation. "Authenticity necessarily implies substantiality" says Camil Petrescu; Eliade includes in the semantic sphere of authenticity the idea of experience and proposes authenticity as an alternative to originality; Octav Şuluţiu has its own theory of authenticity, which is " tangible only in life", and in literature it is possible only its illusion.
