Summary/Abstract: In June 1844 Dickens began his 11-month tour of Italy, which gave him the chance to visit the most renowned cities of the Grand Tour. This paper aims at showing that, far from displaying the detached, superficial and patronising attitude of many British tourists, in his controversial and ironic travelogue entitled Pictures from Italy Dickens approached Italy with authentic sympathy.
