Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on the different ways in which Bangladeshi-British writer Monica Ali deals with cross-cultural encounters. While in her debut novel she concentrated on the secluded British Bangladeshi community in East-End London, in her second novel, set in Portugal, she approaches the theme from a wider perspective, breaking through the invisible walls of the ethnic niche.
