Summary/Abstract: The friendship shared by Mallarmé and Whistler is the point of departure for recalling several texts the poet devoted to the painter, especially the translation of Whistler’s lecture, Ten O’Clock (1885), in which the innovator of key solutions in painting (tonalism) described his understanding of art. The analysis of this text permits a rethinking of the ever-topical problem of place and the significance of art in society while asserting the affinity of the two artists of seeking new form of expression, defiant of convention and habit.
