The Semantic Field of the Word Ğahiliyya in the Qur’an

Summary/Abstract: The paper consists of four parts. The first part is an introduction which sets out preliminary remarks about the word ǧāhiliyya and its specificity, outlines the content and purpose of this paper, and maps out its methods and the literature on which it draws. The second part addresses detailed lexical meaning of the word ǧāhiliyya on the basis of classical and contemporary reference works of Arabic lexicography as well as the contemporary works by prominent orientalists in the field of Arabic language and Qur’anic studies. The third, the central part of the paper deals with four meanings of the word ǧāhiliyya in the Qur’an by way of a semantic, contextual and tafsir analysis. The fourth part contains the author’s concluding remarks.
