Summary/Abstract: Dostoievski is an alive presence in Horia Lovinescu's life and writing turning into an "obsession" as the Romanian playwright used to say in his interviews. The Karamazovs represents the very embodiment of this strong connection between these two different writers. The interior avatars of some of Horia Lovinescu's characters track their origins back to the destinies brought to life by the Russian novelist. Placed under the sign of moral nihilism, the characters from The Karamazovs strive to find a meaning for their mere existence. Confronted with the demon, the characters deepen in interrogations. A question leads to another one and the answers are most of the time suspended and unreachable. In lack of certitudes, the existence takes the aspect of a quest for personal truth.
