Summary/Abstract: The following dominant features of the academic style are present in Usenet: predominance of the cognitive function, thematic restriction, explicitness and precision of information, authenticity, predominance of subordinate clauses and complex-compound sentences, the lack of emotional markedness, identification of the intellectual attitude of the sender towards one’s own statements, objectivisation, logical composition, presence of series of substantive arguments, occurrence of academic terminology, formulas and symbols, as well as quotations and footnotes. Discussion groups are one of the oldest types of Internet communication which influence other genological forms, such as discussion forums or specialised mailing lists. Thus, the linguistic phenomena in Usenet are not incidental and individual in nature: they are significant also in examining the Internet as a communication space.
