NON-IDENTITY IDENTITY AND ART IN THE 20th CENTURY

Summary/Abstract: The renowned German philosopher Udo Marquard discusses the issue of identity and art in the 20th century through the prism of three questions: the identity of the general and the identity of the particular; identity and art in the modern world of compensation; and, the delusion of Gesamtkunstwerk and the need for non-identity. The paper included in this issue was presented at the symposium on «Identity and Art» held in November 1995 in Ludwigsburg that attempted to shed light on the issue of identity from the perspective of different disciplines: psychoanalysis, aesthetics, philosophy, sociology and political and entrepreneurship practises.
