Relief from the absolute

Summary/Abstract: In his speech delivered soon after Hans Blumenberg’s death, Odo Marquard presented his personal memories of the philosopher as well as concise characteristics of his oeuvre. Marquard sums up the ideas present in Blumenberg’s best known books, in order to extract his main argument: human beings, which are transient cannot bear the absolute and in various ways try to gain distance towards it. The speech ends with the reflection on the experience of the lack of time which provides the basis for the book entitled Life Time and World Time (Lebenszeit und Weltzeit) and the explanation of Blumenberg’s “difficult” character.
