The use of the official languages in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Summary/Abstract: Bosnia and Herzegovina has three official languages: Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian. According to historic background, these are three very related and familiar languages whose speakers communicate without any obstacles in everyday communication and whose speakers can use any version of the text. For official use, all documents are prepared in all three language versions. This paper explores how this trilingualism actually works, how the official use of language functions, what differences appear in texts and if they are always present, whether these differences have their justification and hence also the ensuing preparation of a text in multiple versions. Consequently, this paper discusses whether official multilingualism in Bosnia and Herzegovina actually works or whether it is only formal.
