A Dream of Community: Retrospective Fiction or Vision for the Future? The Communitarian Concept of Community

Summary/Abstract: The starting point for the analysis is the ambiguity of the term „community”, which has both negative and positive connotations. The basic problem the article addresses refers to the possibility to create a community which would meet the requirements of modernity – in contrast to the traditional notion of Gemeinschaft created by Ferdinand Toennies. The concept of modernized “responsive community” is presented within the framework of one of the contemporary theoretical approaches: communitarianism. The author proves that the “modernized” vision of community described and explored by communitarian thinkers has a certain chance to be put into practice in the era of modern and post-modern society.
