Summary/Abstract: The paper explores the tangible presence of the city as a topic in history and art, as a topos of culture and everyday life in some texts from different Balkan literary sources. The development of the city in the different stages of civilizations is considered in relation to the Balkan cultural experience. The lines of argumentation used to support the thesis include some academic, anthropological and cultural studies of Pierre Nora, Fernand Braudel, Vesna Goldsworthy, Božidar Jezernik, as well as journalist and fiction works by the authors: Vera Mutafchieva, Boris Aprilov, Atanas Dalchev, Elias Canetti, Nikos Kazantzakis, Vladislav Bajac, Orhan Pamuk. The city is interpreted through the thematic metaphors of the sunken-lost city, the city-chimera, the city-painting, the city-hammam and the city-temple.
