Translator as a Surgeon: Operations on the Medical Text: from Resection to Extension

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the present article is to discuss the concept of the translator as a surgeon who in the process of translation, like a surgeon in the operating room, performs various operations on the source text. The translator shortens the original removing its fragments, makes it longer by implanting new words or solely changes the source language into the target one. Yet, the translator always leaves the text covered with scars for the sake of preserving the overall clarity of the message. The above issues are addressed in the context of medical translation and illustrated with examples showing the translation of shortened forms from Polish into English. The illustrative material comes from a corpus of medical articles on vascular diseases, published in the journal Acta Angiologica in the years 2002–2011.
