Summary/Abstract: International relations theories, especially when they are read superficially or in a haste seem overtly optimistic or inescapably pessimistic. Classical debate appears as an irreconcilable game between Hobbesian and Lockean outcomes. In reality the flow of events takes a medium turn rendering obsolete many explanatory models. India’s approach towards Sri Lankan human rights issue after the end of the civil conflict shows that Realist balance of power can very well coexist with Liberal regimes. Thus, in the first phase, New Delhi endorsed many US sponsored resolutions within the United Nations Human Rights Council only to reverse the moment and take the side of Colombo in late March 2014. In the beginning India was eager to play the role of an emerging superpower allied with America while afterwards it acted as a regional hegemon with paternalistic reflexes out of fear that Sri Lanka might tilt towards China. Bearing in mind such an example IR students should try to device better explanatory models along the neo-neo synthesis.
