Summary/Abstract: The contemporary world is faced with an ever greater number of divorced families. Divorce is stressful for all the family members, for children as well as aduits, and the adjustment to the new conditions occurs slowly, either with few or many problems. Disappointment with the partner and failure in marriage can have negative bearing on the attitudes of individuals towards members of the opposite sex, but also towards ons's own role in the marriage and family. In this work the author presents the results of research the aim of which was to compare the attitudes of parents from complete families and families with a single parent according to the desirability of characteristics for boys, Le. girls. The findings indicate that life in a one-parent family can influence parents' attitudes towards the desirability of characteristics for one sex, although the differences extracted are not great. It cannot be said that parents from single-parent families are more prone to stereotypes of sexual roles. Stressing the importance of particularcharacteristics is the result of negative experience and of the creation of an "idealized" image of members of the opposite sexes.
