Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the role of Sanskrit in the formation of the linguistic theory of the famous Russian linguist F. F. Fortunatov.The author shows the influence of Sanskrit on the formation of the methodology of comparative historical linguistics in Fortunatov’s works, on his famous teaching about the form of the word, on the typological classification of the world languages, formulated by Fortunatov, on his teaching about the grammatical classes of words and accentual laws. The article concludes that Sanskrit playeda great role in the formation of Fortunatov’s linguistic concepts.
