Summary/Abstract: In the United States, in the nineteenth and early twentieth century, sexuality gains a significant socio-politicalmeaning, and also becomes an object of interest in medicine. Sexual anxieties of society drive the need fordetailed knowledge about sexuality and its use in the elimination and prevention of related phenomena thatare considered pathological. The idea of a comprehensive and systematic knowledge of sexuality results inthe establishment of the Bureau of Social Hygiene, and later the Committee for Research in the Problems ofSex and the undertaking of pioneering sex research in the American population. The aim of this article is to analyze the factors responsible for the inclusion of sexuality in the area of American scientific research andthe reconstruction of this process.
