A Contrastive View of Dictionary Meanings of Primary Colour Terms in Serbian and English

Summary/Abstract: The main aim of this study is to examine the dictionary meanings of terms related to the primary colours (red, blue and yellow) in Serbian and English, and to determine whether there are relations of equivalence or correspondence between them, as well as their extent. The study is based on the corpus consisting of two comprehensive dictionaries of Serbian and English. Depending on the semantic field that lexemes are related to, the study offers an overview of five meaning categories in both languages: (1) flora, fauna and biological aspects, (2) physical characteristics, (3) emotional states and behaviour, (4) politics, organisations and groups and (5) оther. With the exception of certain specificities, we find a degree of meaning overlap in the compared languages.
