Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on a manipulative hedging strategy that a journalist uses in Serbian and German newspaper articles in order to express the lack of their taking sides regarding the verity of the propositive contents. This way of distancing from the propositive contents is listed in the domain of modality in linguistic literature, that is, indirect epistemic modality. By using a contrastive method, the author points to a spectrum of linguistic devices characteristic for this type of modification of a statement, in view of the fact that the speaker is not the source of information, pointing out similarities and differences in the languages concerned regarding this issue.
