Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the specific characteristics of the traditional Turkish family in the Turkish village as well as the transition of the family to contemporary forms in the towns under the influence of the social development in Turkey in the first half of the XX century. Using valuable sources of information the paper studies the value of marriage, the Turkish traditional wedding, the relations among the members of the family, its structure and functions. Reflected in the paper are the considerable changes after the Constitutional Revolution of 1924 in the Turkish society towards various liberties for women who in traditional Turkey have been very much restricted by religious morality. The new legislation did away with polygamy and permitted access of women to higher education. The article supplies data about the number of children in the Turkish family in the end of the 70s, the knowledge and use of means of family planning.
