Summary/Abstract: The appearance of radio and its expanding use after the World War I caused the emergence of a special branch in the intelligence activities – radio reconnaissance. The Serbian and Yugoslav armed forces from the beginning understood the importance of this type of intelligence work. The first radio reconnaissance units in the armed forces of Socialist Yugoslavia were established with the Soviet expert and technical assistance. Although they were designed for wiretapping and monitoring radio traffic of the armed forces of Western countries, political and ideological conflict between the USSR with the SFRY and the Cominform directed them to the countries of „people’s democracy", from where military intervention against the SFRY was expected. The units for radio reconnaissance were split between their intelligence-security purpose and affiliation to the basic branch – signal branch. That is why some major changes occurred in the formation of these units in the above mentioned period.
