Summary/Abstract: Introduction. The moment students choose their degree course allows for analysing their economic situation. The aim of the article was to research the impact of socio-economic conditions on students’ selection of the degree course. Material and methods. The survey involved 514 first-year students of Pope John Paul II State School of Higher Education in Biała Podlaska. Results. In the research process, it was found that Emergency Medicine Department conducted the best analysis of the financial situation of students, whereas the students of Russian Philology Department were the least tested ones. In nearly 70.0% of the respondents, both parents work, having a steady income. The average level of net income amounted to PLN 810,00 per capita. The student’s household consisted of, on average, 3.9 persons. Conclusions. The average PSW student’s income per capita in the household falls in the range of up to PLN 1000, i.e. nearly 30% lower than the disposible monthly income per capita in 2015 (the Polish Central Statistical Office, 2016), with 3-4 persons in the household, in which both parents are professionally active.
