Summary/Abstract: The topic of this paper is a forgotten novel by Eliza Orzeszkowa At the Bottom of Conscience (which is only known to literary historians), and more specifically, its connection with an incredibly popular genre of the 19th century – the mystery novel, popularized by Eugeniusz Sue. In Some remarks on the novel, the writer sharply criticized the literary output of the author of The Mysteries of Paris, and she continued her polemic with him in At the bottom of conscience. She used ‘schemes’ characteristic of the mystery novel for the purpose of the didactic novel.
