Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes 18th – 19th century cello performing art development. Baroque influences of instrument characteristics over playing technique and sound quality are examined in detail. Baroque cello schools are surveyed, analyzing their impact on cellists in Europe. Left and right hand performance techniques are studied to determine their capability and achievement in the Classicism. Analyzed are contradictions between composition difficulty and the cello’s real possibilities. A need to change some cello performance dating is demonstrated, with changes close to a century for the Baroque era and more than fifty years for the 19th century.
