Summary/Abstract: If psychiatry broadly follows the model already established by the rationalism of the classical age, romanticism creates a poetics of madness through the positive valorization of the exceptionality. Romantic ideology revitalizes the sacred origin of madness, but also strengthens the consciousness of the individual in the process of creation. The image of the romantic genius, perceived by others as mad, and at the same time self-defining as insane to emphasize opposition to the mediocre mass, establishes a tradition deeply rooted in the soil of Russian literature. The late critical attitude, either by irony or by parody, to the romantic character's exceptionality, will be the engine of consolidating a new vision of the world, generically called by the term of realism.
