Summary/Abstract: For the romantic hero writing means to define your own identity only in relation to the requirements of your personality; Poprischin shows us that he does exactly the opposite. For him writing is fighting for affirmation of a different identity than that imposed in society, but one that fully corresponds to the social model. He wants to be above the others just to enjoy, like them, the benefits of the hierarchy. In the Gogol's text, Poprischin's madness is not just mental illness, but an unmasking of society, a cry of discontent that Gogol addresses to it.
