Summary/Abstract: Undertaking obligation for public interest is a peculiar institution of the Hungarian civil law. This institution is very similar to the ancient Roman pollicitatio. This paper, at first, gives an outline of the classical Roman rules of pollicitatio, and after that it compares the ancient rules with the remarkably similar Hungarian regulations of today.
