Julian of Norwich: Mystical Theology of Divine Love and Motherhood (Part I)

Summary/Abstract: The principal scope of this contribution is to present the life and work of the medieval English author, anchoress, and mystic Julian of Norwich (1342 – 1416) and to underline her spiritual and theological importance. Correspondingly, the study is articulated on two levels. The fi rst part is focused on the historical background of Julian’s work, Revelations of Divine Love, where particular emphasis is given to the social and spiritual aspects of the anchoritic way of life. On the basis of autobiographical information and the author’s literary style, the study looks into Julian’s hidden life as well as into the inner structure of the Revelations, which unite in a unique way the human and mystical dimension, experiential level and rational knowledge, grace and human cooperation, doctrine and spirituality, poetry and rigour of thought, fi delity to Tradition and freedom of interpretation. The second part analyses the doctrinal dimension of the Revelations. The main theme that passes through the entire work is the tender and maternal love of God. Through its prism Julian perceives particular theological questions and mysteries regarding the Trinity, creation, sin, redemption, Mariology and eschatology. Special attention is given to the “theology of hope” which arises from the recurring promise of Christ: “All shall be well”.
