Summary/Abstract: In New Germania, north Paraguay, the inhabitants are divided and united based on various social categories. German, Paraguayan or Germanino are the three locally used identities which are partly exclusive. Therefore, social identities are not omnipresent, but employed only occasionally. Why, in different moments, are various identities assumed, which differently define a person in society, assuming at the same time that this is the same, single person, a single Me? Based on the examples from New Germania, the author answers the question regarding the relationship between social identities and individual identity.
