Participatory Fotography

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present participatory photography as a means of communication, and to demonstrate its potential applications. After a brief presentation of two examples of research using participatory methods, i.e., those in which the “natives” themselves produce the images, I will discuss some aspects of the “View From Inside” project, which was carried out in Mexico and Guatemala in the summer of 2010. In discussing some pictures, situations, and mistakes that occurred during the field work, I try to outline the possibilities offered by this method. I hope that this text will be helpful for people planning their own participatory research. The following article is a summary of a portion of a B.A. thesis entitled "Photography as a participatory method in visual anthropology".
