Summary/Abstract: This article is concerned with the functioning of the aorist tense as a noted verbal form of the contemporary Serbo-Croat used in the literary work of Isak Samokovlija. The aorist is the most frequent verbal form in Samokovlija’s texts from his early period (1927—1929). However, in his subsequent works there is a tendency for the aorist to be replaced by the perfect tense. The function of the aorist of perfective verbs is to energize the text and render it more expressive. The aorist of imperfective verbs and those with two aspects is rather rare and has a very narrow functional range.
