Valuable Representatives of Musical Folklore from Bukovina: the Shepherd’s Pipe Virtuoso Vasile Ungureanu

Summary/Abstract: Born in 1952 in Mălini village, Vasile Ungureanu is a famous shepherd’s pipe virtuoso from the ethno-folklore area of Fălticeni. A natural talent, he started playing the shepherd’s pipe at an young age, then he continued with the big pipe, as well as the fipple flute (“tilinka”). He learned and adopted the folk repertoire specific to his native village. As a young man he was remarked as a virtuoso of the shepherd’s pipe; he took part at many local folklore festivals and before 1989 he was awarded first prize in the National Festival “Singing Romania”. After the change of the regime in 1989, he founded the Shepherds’ folklore group “Obcina Stânişoarei”; this ensemble took part in numerous folklore music events at home and abroad. Vasile Ungureanu and his ensemble’s repertoire is extremely valuable, consisting of archaic, genuinely peasant folk music; it includes specific shepherd genres, as well as pieces related to the winter traditions. He fully deserves the title of national and world “living human heritage” that he was awarded in 2015 for his contribution to the preservation and promotion of perennial Romanian traditions.
